Submarine arriving this morning for storage and recycling

USS Sam Rayburn served as a nuclear ballistic missile submarine from 1963-1989, where it became a reactor training ship for more than 30 years in Charleston, South Carolina. In 2021 it was towed to Norfolk for defueling and has now arrived in Puget Sound for storage and eventual scrapping. The sub was brought here because all Navy reactors (once defueled) are considered low level hazardous waste, and after going through the Ship Recycling Program have their reactor compartments moved to Hanford for permanent disposal.
