I know you all are as outraged and sad that Shawn was killed while driving one of Metro’s near 24-hour routes (similar to route 7), where operators encounter everyone and anyone at all times in varying degrees of mental stability and drug use.
It’s a truly challenging job where his (and all Metro operators and riders) safety is constantly at risk and while Metro claims fare enforcement is not equitable, this approach ironically deprioritizes operator and rider safety in favor of dangerous riders. To take action, please email Metro’s general managers office and Dow about how Metro operators and rider’s safety needs to be taken seriously and prioritized. We don’t need another work group or King County Council session on how to increase safety when it’s obvious, fare enforcement needs to return. Metro operators shouldn’t be forced to just let anyone ride.

If you receive your an ORCA card from work (i.e. Amazon, Microsoft, Starbucks or UW) express your safety concerns to your HR or benefits administrator with an ask that they email the Metro GM office. If Amazon or any of these larger ORCA business account holders were to say publicly that they were not going to renew or drastically reduce their contracts, that’s really force Metro’s hand since they represent a large part of its budget and would be a huge repetitional risk.
TLDR: I’d you’re as mad and despondent as I am about safety aboard Metro buses and value the lives of the bus drivers emailing King County Metro leadership and the Exec asking for action!
