Seems like I’m posting a lot on situations happening at the airport these days. You get a sense of what my job is like! It’s endless~
Many of you may have read that there is a leak in the Olympic Pipeline which is the main line that provides jet fuel to Seattle Tacoma International Airport.
The Olympic Pipeline is a 400 mile long pipeline that pretty much stretches down the I-5 corridor originating from the Whatcom/Skagit county refineries. Crews are currently excavating segments of the pipeline to find the source of the leak and plug it.
Bottom Line Up Front: There is NO fuel shortage at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
Fueling operations are a function of the airlines and not the airport itself. But the Port of Seattle is coordinating with the airlines and fueling companies to coordinate the delivery of jet fuel via trucks in order to avoid a shortage. We literally have dozens of trucks coming in daily to fill our silos (6 days and counting).
As of this writing, we do not anticipate a fuel shortage going into the Thanksgiving weekend (I hope I don’t have to eat those words *knock on wood*)
HOWEVER if you are flying a long haul flight (i.e. international travel), there is a chance that your itinerary/schedule might change by adding a refueling stop in Vancouver B.C. or Alaska.
PLEASE CHECK YOUR FLIGHT SCHEDULE REGULARY FOR ANY CHANGES. This is not necessarily due to a shortage at SEA, but because airlines are trying to conserve fuel at our airport to avoid a fuel shortage. (Potato, Potaahto?)
I’ll post again if there are any major delays or unforeseen circumstances.
