Tips about sea life and general safety when tide pooling

In my previous post it seemed there was some good concern about marine life. If you’re going tide pooling tonight or any other night there’s some basic things to be aware of. Please note I’m not an expert or claim to be but I’m sure some experts of marine biologists can comment. But from my personal understanding:

– Don’t pick up anything. 1: unless you know for a fact what it is, it could be poisonous and harm you or your child. 2: disturbing marine life and the ecosystem brings in harmful bacteria when touching them.

– Be cognizant of your surroundings. In my previous post you saw a beautiful octopus. That was within 10 yards of everyone walking down the path to the beach.

– If you don’t know where to walk, walk where other people are. There is such a thing as imperceptible shelves on the beach and you can fall through them.

Respect the nature and you will get to see it for many years to come. If you see something wrong, say something. Watching someone’s children pick up and throw a starfish? Call them out. Any advice for people wondering what they are looking at? Provide it! You might make a friend.

Like I said I am no expert but I would hate for you to go to low tide tonight and step on an octopus and feel horrible. If anyone wants to comment some advice I would love to know more about how to be safe.
