Trump’s Project 2025 Is Coming for Seattle’s National Park—Stop the Klondike Gold Rush Closure

Seattle’s Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park is under threat. The National Park Service is planning to shut down this historic site, which has been a gateway to the city’s gold rush past for decades. Located in the heart of Pioneer Square, this free museum tells the story of how Seattle became the “Gateway to the Gold Fields” and played a crucial role in one of the most interesting chapters of American history. Losing this site means losing an important piece of our city’s identity.

This isn’t just about history; it’s about access. The Klondike Visitor Center is one of the few national park sites in an urban setting. It provides educational programs, ranger talks, and exhibits that bring history to life. If we let it close, we lose a vital cultural and educational resource that makes Seattle unique and the historic building is at risk of demolition. As NPCA President and CEO Theresa Pierno put it, the government is “dismantling the National Park Service as we know it, ranger by ranger and brick by brick.” This is just the beginning—Project 2025, the right-wing plan to gut federal agencies, could accelerate even more closures and sell-offs of OUR public lands.

We need to act now. Contact your representatives and demand that this closure be stopped. Make noise. National parks belong to all of us, and Seattle deserves to keep this historic gem. Let’s fight to preserve it before it’s gone!
