Urgent Tenants Union Assistance Requested

Hi Reddit!

I’ve reached out via email form to what is surely a very busy and overworked tenants union a month ago and have not heard back. Since then the landlord for myself and 4 other roommates have just been sent a $10k bill (and 211 page pdf outlining damages with plenty of pictures to boot) that we need to pay within 14 days (this is already minus a $4k security deposit). Edit: Looking at it now its only addressed to 3 roommates and myself as another roommate moved out a month prior to tenancy ending in order to take advantage of better rental rates so it puts 4 (and not 5 of us) on the hook.

Quick Summary:
House in Phinney Ridge has been rented out since 2018. Landlord tells us in August that he is ending tenancy after lease as he is planning to sell property. 4 of the 5 roommates have lived at the place for 9 months or less. 1 was there for 5+ years. When we moved in we were given forms to sign to indicate property condition which the landlord is harping on pointing out that we listed house as satisfactory and which promised that we would return the house to original rental state. This would require us to return house to 2018 state after 15+ roommates have lived here and puts all the responsibility of those living here 9 months or less. Only information the landlord texted us when we asked him in September about cleaning the house was a Zillow link full of pictures from 2018 of a sparkling brand new house. Myself and my roommates busted our hump to go on dump runs, go to Goodwill, and clean out a 5 bedroom house w/basement of the majority of goods/items left behind through the years. We figured we were “okay” when we left and that the house would need some general cleaning but boy oh boy were we mistaken.

The 200+ page .pdf goes into detail on things such as “speakers missing” that are in a 2018 picture that none of us had ever seen, a window screen and handle missing from my bedroom which was in that state when I moved in, a broken kitchen faucet that we had been working with since he never fixed it, and much more. On old roommate who lived there for 6 years left behind car parts, tools, and chemicals in the backyard. We had no idea what to do with this and this and more have all added up.

We can understand his never ending mentions of unclear baseboards and sills (and I can share this document if anyone wants to read) but it seems like a complete unfortunate mess that my roommates and I just so happened to be the ones there at the time when he decided to end tenancy so we get the shaft.
