WA House Committee hearing on HB 2464 today- Require private detention facilities to comply with local health and law agencies

If you’re looking for something positive to do right now, check out this out:

HB 2464 (Concerning reporting requirements and law enforcement responses for incidents at private detention facilities) is scheduled for public hearing in the House Committee on Community Safety at 1:30 PM.

This bill would require private detention centers to communicate with local health and law agencies in a timely manner. Safety incidents must be reported by the end of the next business day, healthcare standards must be upheld, and tools for detainee communication/visitation must be accessible. There’s a lot packed into this bill, check it out.

Even if a private detention facility chooses not to comply with these standards, it would be good to have this legislation in place. (And it does not apply to facilities operating under a contract in effect prior to 2023, but we absolutely need this for the future).

I know this starts in half an hour, but consider testifying virtually, or submitting a comment in support.
