The senate passed SB 5098 which makes it illegal for citizens to carry a weapon but does not disarm government employees in common protest venues like public buildings and parks. Painted up as a “child safety” measure, but only introduced after MN protests started as a clear means of disarming future protests. ETA: the relevant portions were actually already signed into law in 2023 so I’m misreading the motive.
Page 4 lines 10-12:
it is unlawful for any person to knowingly open carry a firearm or other weapon while knowingly at any permitted demonstration.
and lines 15-21, which let cops restrict open carry 250 FEET AWAY FROM A PROTEST.
It is unlawful for any person to knowingly open carry a firearm or other weapon while knowingly within 250 feet of the perimeter of a permitted demonstration after a duly authorized state or local law enforcement officer advises the person of the permitted demonstration and directs the person to leave until he or she no longer possesses or controls the firearm or other weapon.
Maybe this bill wasn’t closely read, but it’s not too late to call your rep and get these sections fixed.
