WA Rent Stabilization Bill in trouble, being targeted by wealthy businessman

After a very successful House Housing Committee hearing last week, the Senate’s version of the Rent Stabilization bill is now being heard by the Senate Housing Committee on Wednesday, Jan 22 at 1:30pm. And because of such a successful hearing last week, the senate bill SB 5222 is now being targeted by wealthy businessman, Tim Eyman. He is using his contacts to drive votes against this bill and unless people speak up and vote “PRO”, the bill may be in trouble. Here’s the link to vote: WA State Leg SB 5222 Rent Stabilization for Residential Tenants. This bill prevents unpredictable and unlimited rent increases by requiring:

  • Limit rent increases to 7% per year
  • Require 6 months’ notice for increases over 3%
  • Count fees as rent for increase calculations
  • Cap move-in fees to one month’s rent
  • Limit late fees to 1.5% of monthly rent
