WC Watch Party Spot #5: The George & Dragon Pub (no spoilers)

Match: England/Croatia June 17, 1pm

The George & Dragon in Fremont is the obvious spot to watch games involving England, but it has a problem: it lost its liquor license because of a communications snafu. A different recent post noted that it’s back, kind of. Since England was playing today, I checked it out.

Just driving by it was clear they were showing the game, and after a few minutes, I found a parking spot and walked in. (Note: most nearby parking has a 2 hour limit, and the group stage games are 2 hours, so you may want to figure out a different parking strategy than I did, or bike or take public transit).

They are allowed to show games as a ‘private party’, and you want to be on their guest list. The easiest way to do this, I was told, is to message them a couple days in advance on Facebook, Instagram, or their website. You can ask for details in person if they’re open – they have folks at the entrance to make sure they don’t run afoul of the liquor board rules.

The place was pretty packed all game long with a heavy England-supporting crowd. I ordered at the bar first, then went looking for a seat. The only obvious free ones were outside in the sun with a screen far away. They probably should add a screen or two, but for now my solution was to look for a free spot at someone else’s table, and as I suspected, the first group I asked was happy to let me take a spot just under a screen.

The drinks and food were standard American British pub fare – of course I ordered fish and chips (they offer 1, 2 and 3 piece options). The picture and sound were fine if you didn’t sit way out in the boonies. Chairs were okay, and the service was great – they had plenty of people hustling around delivering food and clearing empties, and near the end many were reminding folks to settle their tabs.

I hope they get their real license back soon, but for now the hassle of getting on the guest list is worth it. I’m not clear what games they’re showing, but clearly all England and US games, and probably many others.

Edit: as mentioned by a commenter, it’s 21+ only
