My six-year-old son has Autism and ADHD (among some other learning disabilities, he had a stroke at birth) but is very high functioning and intelligent, and is in a small mainstream private school right now in Texas. We are considering moving to the Seattle area, but I would love to be able to find him a public school that suits his needs.
He gets extremely overwhelmed with lots of kids and has major sensory difficulties, and has very slow processing so it takes him a lot longer to figure things out than the neurotypical kids. He is advanced in his abilities but just takes longer, and gets easily overwhelmed. He also has dysgraphia (and maybe dyslexia) so he needs some help in that area. He is in a mainstream school and is doing fine so far but he has a lot of accommodations.
Are there any public schools in the area that have great programs for high functioning autistic children? I saw some extremely expensive private schools on Google but I would love if there was a public or charter school.
Also – can anyone speak on the availability of special services such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, and play therapy? In Texas it is very hard to find providers who take insurance, and there is a very long wait, or you have to do private pay which is so expensive.
