So 3 times in the last year, I have seen older women selling prepackaged raw meat on busses in south Seattle. The woman would have a large basket filled with I think some kind of raw pork product. People would come up to her and negotiate or haggle price, then money and meat would change hands and the buyer would go back to their seat, presumably so that other people can also buy meat from her if they want.
What is going on here? Raw meat feels like the single worst thing to sell on a bus. It goes bad if it’s unrefridgerated for over 4 hours, and there is no way for the buyer to know how long that raw meat has been outside of the fridge. Additionally, it’s not something you can consume on the bus or as soon as you get off, so it’s not a particularly convenient thing to buy on a bus. You need some sort of heating implement at home in order to eat it, so who is buying raw meat on a bus that can’t buy it at a supermarket? And why only raw meat? This is the only thing I have seen sold on any buses, and it’s extremely odd to me.
My immediate instinct is that they have drugs in them, but the prices (which I can’t remember perfectly) feel kind of low for that? I thought maybe it’s just one woman doing this and that the people buying meat from her are patronizing her, but I saw one person return to their seat with their friend and say “I got two for $35” in a low but excited voice, meaning the buyers seem to care about the product itself. Are these just the best pork chops you’ll find in the city, and the only way to find them is to happen to catch a bus with the porkchop lady? I am truly lost for ideas, does anyone know what’s going on?
