Why Did the U.S. Treasury Just Give Elon Musk Access to Our Federal Payment System?

Hey Seattle, we need to talk about something that’s getting way too little attention. The U.S. Treasury just granted Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) full access to the federal payment system—which handles Social Security, Medicare, and government contractor payments.

This means Musk’s team can oversee transactions tied to millions of Americans’ personal data, including seniors and low-income individuals who rely on government support. A top Treasury official resigned in protest, but this decision still happened with almost no public discussion.

Why should Seattle care?

Big Tech Influence Is Already Out of Control – Seattle knows all too well what happens when billionaires get too much power. We’ve seen how Amazon, Microsoft, and others influence housing, wages, and local policies. Now imagine Musk controlling federal financial infrastructure.

Massive Privacy & Security Risks – Musk already owns a disturbing share of U.S. communication infrastructure (Twitter/X, Starlink). Now, he gets access to sensitive financial transactions linked to government programs? What happens if this data is used for political bias, surveillance, or corporate gain?

Corporate Capture of Public Institutions – Seattle struggles with rising costs, homelessness, and wage gaps while billionaires get tax breaks. This move hands a single ultra-wealthy individual control over federal money flow—shouldn’t we be asking why our government is serving billionaires instead of the people?

What can we do?

If this alarms you: Read this thread.

Call your reps & demand transparency – Why was this decision made with so little public input?
Spread the word – More people need to know about this before it’s too late.
Push for oversight – No billionaire should have this level of unchecked power over public systems.

This isn’t just about Musk. It’s about who controls our government—the people or a handful of billionaires.

Seattle, what do you think? Are we okay with this?
