I have lived in Seattle for a few years and have gone to Pride every year. I’d moved from a place where I couldn’t express myself openly for fear of bigots to where now I can go to work and not have to worry about being fired for being myself. So, to say that celebrating the ability to be me is so refreshing.
But, like the occasional bowl of soup, there is a fly that shows up to ruin the experience. If you have live or come to most events in Seattle, you know who I’m talking about. The “We’re all going to hell.” Guy. I don’t know his name off the top of my head and frankly, won’t waste the brain space. Every Pride event I’ve been to or going down to Pike market sometimes, he shows up and causes problems.
I’m not going to go into everything wrong with him but needless to say, he is a sore sight at any event.
What I would like to organize is very similar to what I’ve been seeing more often dealing with him, is a group of us older queers or allies to prevent him from getting into the area. Nothing physical but standing in the way and making sure he can’t enter by being a human wall.
Before commenting that he’s allowed to because of freedom of speech, I’m not suggesting that we silence him or anything. But if someone brought us ear plugs and a loud speaker, I wouldn’t opposed. I believe that we can make sure that this pride, we can keep hate out and allow others to express themselves.
Edit: Crap, I meant to say next Sunday, not this Sunday. Can’t edit the title now.
