The world’s largest living Western red cedar (and the largest tree in Washington) is the Duncan Cedar, on the Olympic Peninsula near the Highway 101 loop: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duncan_Cedar I can’t remember if I’ve ever seen it in person, but according to https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/trip-reports/trip_report-2025-05-22.224532038037 you can drive right up to it on a dirt road. 2nd attached photo is the tree (from Wikipedia; credit to Steven Pavlov, CC BY-SA 4.0 license). 1st attached photo is the tree rendered in mosaic form, on a pillar at SeaTac airport near the A gates. Looks pretty close to the real thing! The plaque credits the photographer Peter de Lory for the black-and-white photo the mosaic is based on, and the mosaic was made by artist Stephen Miotto according to https://www.peterdelory.com/champion (Odd that he’s not listed on the plaque. No shade to the photographer, but creating the mosaic looks like the harder job. Also not sure what it means that the mosaic was “fabricated in Italy”. Did they glue the tiles to a flat surface in Italy, then fly the flat surface over here and wrap it around the pillar?
