WSF Spokane Crew – thank you!!

I rode the Kingston-Edmonds ferry route this evening on the Spokane, and had a minor scare. A man tried to get into the backseat of my car, (thankfully my doors were locked) and then aimlessly wandered off to a different part of the car deck.

When I felt it was safe to, I went up to find the second mate’s office to let someone know, and the crew of the Spokane responded promptly. The woman in the office radioed another crew member (I believe the second mate? maybe first? I’m not sure) who was just walking through the companionway door. As I was telling him what happened, a state trooper passed by, and the mate(?) stopped him as well. I described the incident, if it can even really be called that, and the man once again, and they both headed down to the car deck to look for him.

I stopped by the galley, since everyone knows chocolate helps calm the nerves, and ran into the mate and trooper in the stairwell on the way back down, as well as a couple other hands they had picked up along the way. As far as I know, they never found the man, but I wasn’t really expecting that they would.

What really made a difference for me was that throughout this entire ordeal, the WSF crew took me, and my safety, seriously. Even as trivial as my experience was, no one made me feel silly for being shaken by and reporting it, and no one dismissed it out of hand. This is the only time I’ve ever been concerned for my safety on a ferry (even mildly), and the crew’s quick response was incredibly reassuring.

Long story short – to the crew of the Spokane, thank you!!
