Spent an hour cleaning an intersection in the Central District. SDOT surprised me in the best way

Marnin’ Seattle! I wanted to share a small neighborhood thing that made my week.

Lately I’ve been spending an hour here and there cleaning up the streets near me in the CD. A lot of dirt builds up in the median and gutters, so I’ve been shoveling it into big piles (about a wheelbarrow’s worth) and sweeping some sidewalks. My hope was to eventually get a wheelbarrow and haul it away myself.

Well, after I cleaned up one intersection, SDOT showed up, shoveled the piles into their truck, and then pressure washed the entire intersection. It looked so much better, quickly.

I ended up chatting with the workers (one guy lives in the neighborhood) told me he had seen me out there working and wanted to help out. Super wholesome and motivating.

I think I’ll keep branching out and focus on dirt traps and neglected spots near me. I’m also going to try to find SDOT crews occasionally and ask how I can best help without getting in the way.

Anyone have advice for doing this effectively in a way that’s actually helpful for the city?

I’ve also run across u/pengweather in r/bayarea, very inspiring!
