This Monday (7/13) at 5:00 PM City Council will be discussing amendments for the Seattle Transit Measure (STM). Some of which would be great, like exploring progressive forms of revenue for transit, but others would reduce transit service so the bus comes less often. Some of them are great like: 11 and 17: which would state the city council’s intent to pursue progressive revenue and reduce reliance on the sales tax for future transit funding in Seattle. 10 and 29: which would prioritize bus service to the city’s densest areas (Regional Centers like Ballard) and would raise the mandatory spending on transit service from 60% to 75%. But some are real bad: Amendment 13: which would reduce the measure’s sales tax rate from 0.3% to 0.2% and force Seattle to cut transit service Amendment 5: which would shrink the duration of the measure from 10 years to 6.75 years. This would force its renewal to be on a special election in 2033. Special elections mean more money and time spent to get people’s attention and to turn out voters. Amendment 4: which would force the city council to pass a law every year dictating specific bus service investments. This would slow down Metro’s process to deliver more service and likely pit all the routes against each other. Council doesn’t need to waste more time and process to get people on the bus. We need better transit service yesterday, so come out and make your voice hear on Monday and let city council know that we should be improving transit to cut down on traffic and pollution. Come out to provide public comment about how better bus service would improve how you get around and how cuts would affect you. Public comment is at 5:00pm a rally at 4:30pm and remote comment at 9:30am for those that can’t make it. Hope to see you there! submitted by /u/TranspoChoicesWA |
