SMOKE PSA…
As the EWA smoke rolls in, dog parents- please do NOT forget to reduce your exercise/potty walks and MASK UP YOUR PUPS, as needed per AQI! Yes, dog masks exist!
Short durations: Dogs can only wear masks safely for about 10 to 30 minutes at a time.
No heavy exercise: Masks block a dog’s ability to pant, which is how they cool their bodies down.
Your dog will most likely try to get the mask off at first. Make the effort to train them to keep it on. How effective are they? I don’t know, but they will absolutely protect from more bad particles than your pup not wearing one. (My pup wore one during the LA fires and the inside of it was filthy after our brief potty walks.)
Products:
– K9 Mask® Air Filter for Dogs with ‘Extreme Breathe’ Premium Air Filter (pro tip: I lined it again with a human KN95 mask; change out the KN95!)
– Dog Respirator Air Filter Mask
– Breathable Dog Protective Mouth Cover for Outdoor Pollution

EDIT: if a mask agitates/stresses out your dog, it’s not a good option and just be sure to limit time outdoors. (My dog doesn’t mind her mask so I had not considered this). However, I’m not finding any scientific research stating masks are otherwise BAD for dogs; it seems like there hasn’t been sufficient research. Would absolutely welcome scientific/medical guidance from any veterinarians!
