Recently I’ve noticed that, while I get pretty good speed test results and I can do bandwidth-intensive things like streaming video, loading web pages was horribly slow, and sometimes things like a store redirecting me to a payment service just wouldn’t work half the time. I recalled someone here mentioned Quantum Fiber has bad DNS service, so I checked into it a little, and it’s true! Sometimes it would take several second to resolve a domain name, and that’s something that needs to happen at least once, and usually many times, when you load a web page or access almost any kind of internet-based service. The good new is it’s pretty easy to fix with a little tinkering. Your setup might be different than mine because they have different generations of hardware in the field, but I’ll share what worked for me.
First, visit myrouter.q.com from a desktop browser. You’ll probably get a warning that it’s using a self-signed certificate; just ignore that warning and proceed to the site, and log in with the credentials printed on the modem/router. From there, click “Advanced Settings”, then “WAN Settings” from the menu at the left. Look for an option that says “Select DNS type”, which is probably set to “Dynamic DNS”. Change it to “Static DNS” and you’ll be prompted to enter the primary and secondary DNS servers. I used 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 for use Cloudflare’s DNS service, but you could also use 4.4.4.4 and 8.8.8.8 for Google’s. Finally, click “Apply”, and your internet experience should improve dramatically!
