I’m genuinely curious about something, and I’m not trying to start an argument or attack anyone’s voting choices.
If you’re a parent of a school-aged girl who participates in school sports and you voted YES on I-638, how do you feel about the medical sex-verification requirements that came with the initiative?
One thing I think deserves more discussion is that this wasn’t simply a restriction on transgender girls participating in girls’ sports. It also required girls participating in covered girls’ sports to have their biological sex verified by a healthcare provider.
The initiative identified reproductive anatomy, genetic makeup, and naturally produced testosterone as possible criteria for verification.
That raises some questions:
– Would you be comfortable with your daughter having to undergo additional medical examination or testing for the sole purpose of establishing her sex for athletic eligibility?
– Would you be comfortable potentially paying out of pocket for that verification?
– Would you be okay with genetic or hormone testing being part of the process if her existing medical records weren’t sufficient?
– Did you know these requirements were part of the initiative when you voted YES?
I’m particularly interested in hearing from parents who knew about these provisions before voting, as well as those who may not have been aware of them.
I’m not asking this to argue about whether transgender girls should participate in girls’ sports. I’m asking whether people fully understood the broader medical requirements they were voting to put in place for ALL girls participating in covered sports.
I’m genuinely interested in your perspectives.
