Every August, the Pacific Science Center would have a big corner of the building transformed to look like a mini E3. There were about 100 unreleased upcoming games that rotated every week and us kids were assigned a game to play for 10-15 minutes and then rate them. After the time limit was up, you could get back in line and play another game. I remember these events were the first time I got to see the original Playstation and GameCube in person in their respective release years. I played beta versions of games like Chrono Trigger, Destruction Derby, Twisted Metal, Warhawk, Donkey Kong Country 2 and Smash Brothers Melee and they completely blew my mind. One cool thing that I specifically remember was playing an oil field level in twisted metal 2 that was not in the final release.
Anyone else attend these back in the day? I found it funny they called it a ‘Toy Test’ but it only had video games, no toys. As a huge gamer it felt magical and I looked forward to it every year. You knew what games were coming out in the fall and crossed your fingers they would be there to play. The last time I attended was in 2001 when a friend and I took his younger brother, so I’m not sure how many more years they continued to hold it. After 2001 I felt I was just too old (20) to be there when most of the participants were between 8 and 18. I’ve tried to find more info or footage of it but have been largely unsuccessful. Anyone else have fond memories of this?
