Beat the heat– or at least, don’t let it beat you

It’s that time of year again… the 2-3 weeks of avoiding going home after work because it’s hotter inside than it is outside.

Keep an eye on your friends and community members around you– heat exhaustion and heat stroke can strike faster than you’d think.

If you’re on any sort of psychiatric medications/antidepressants, keep in mind that these can lower your tolerance to heat, make it harder for your body to regulate your temperature, and make you more prone to overheating/heat exhaustion.

Be sure you’re drinking plenty of water and keeping up with your electrolytes. If you’re looking after someone who doesn’t want to drink their water, remember you can always give them jello or watered down juice to get them to replenish their fluids. Jelly Drops offers a free trial, if you’re looking to up your game.

Consider taking your kiddos on a trip to the library or a local splash pad. Seattle’s Child just updated their guide for spray parks and wading pools if you need some guidance.

Refill your ice cube trays and put a couple of bottles of water in the fridge for future you.

Throw a couple of ice cubes in your pet’s water bowl when you refill it.

If you want an excuse to hang out in the AC and get some free snacks, make an appointment to donate blood. Northwest Bloodworks is always very kind to me.

If you have a couple bucks to spare, pick up something for your local food pantry. You can never go wrong with juice and sandwich supplies, and anything that helps a struggling parent feed their kiddo without turning on a stove is a big help.

Remember heat makes people cranky. Give those around you (and yourself) some extra grace.

Stay frosty out there friends, and be sure to drop your best free/low cost methods, tips, tricks, hacks, recipes, and activities to beat the heat in the comments!
