I am a general contractor finishing up a 3 month remodel in Seattle. My longtime painter informed me this week that there would be a slight delay. Two of his best guys were grabbed last Monday by ICE and deported to Mexico on Wednesday. What makes it shocking to me is how this happened.
His guys were driving home in a basic white work van from a job in Renton. Not speeding. Not driving erratically. No broken taillight.
A car pulled up beside them so the driver and passenger could eyeball them. The car turned on lights and siren and pulled them over. They started to show license and insurance, but in a minute, the ICE agents cuffed them and drove them away. My painter got a call the next day and eventually figured out where to pick up his van. He got a call from Mexico a few days later with more details.
In a nutshell, ICE agents impersonated the police to make a traffic stop and arrest two guys for DWM — Driving While Mexican.
How the hell can this happen in Washington State?
