My husband and I were jobless for 10 months and on the edge of losing our house, so when I got a job offer from a place in LA I had to take it. Not a day goes by that I don’t despise having to make that decision. I’m a born and raised western Washingtonian, and LA is the antithesis of everything I love.
I miss the grey skies, the mountains, the evergreens on every corner. I miss the community I had, the shops and cafes I frequented, my church, my friends. I miss watching my daughter play in the trees, finding sticks and pinecones on our walks, and snacking on blackberries around the neighborhood. Just writing it now makes me want to burst into tears again.
Los Angeles is a disgusting cesspool of garbage, cockroaches, and broiling hot sun. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve almost been run over walking my dogs. The crazies are a whole other brand of crazy. The fact that I have to rebuild my life here, in this stinking pile of urban refuse, makes me sick to my stomach.
Every fiber of my being wants to turn around and run back home, but that isn’t an option. I can’t even talk to my husband about it anymore. All I can do is scream into the void and pray I last long enough to get the job experience I need to apply for stuff back in WA. And when I come back, I will never fucking leave. EVER.
